As others have pointed out, this piece comes very well protected, right down to its own little drawstring bag. But let's save that for the packaging review, although Amazon had nothing to do with it. I will say the empty box makes me wish I was 5 again.I was unsure where the ottoman would end up finding a home, the first idea I had didn't work. But it is now in the perfect place, and proving to be an attractive addition to the room, and only yesterday I had an armful of closet-cleaning leftovers and nowhere to put them- until I remembered the new furniture. It's like having a little black hole in your house. And it is indeed black, on the inside that is- lined with a black felt-like surfaces, it is also a candidate for one of those automatic LCD lamps. The outside is finished with a well applied brown leather, straight seams and no loose ends. It seems to be darker than the photo- which is why I had to relocate it, I was hoping it would match another brown leather piece. The two tucks in the lid are deeper than appear in the photo, excellent crumb catchers.Construction is solid and sturdy, seams straight and the hardware decent. The lid support arms are spring loaded, the "it won't slam" type, you still will need to close it yourself. I may replace them at some point with soft closing type, but for now these work fine.No sooner did I have it in place than did one of the cats adopt it instantly, and now he owns it. Must be the cool smooth surface on a hot day he finds appealing. It will also be a test of the leather, in ten years, the whole gang of cats have been unable to break through the other leather in the place, he also took a few exploratory swipes and left only faint marks.

I think calling this ottoman elegant is a bit of a stretch but it's clearly a well-made piece of furniture that arrived carefully packed and in excellent condition. The top has enough padding to serve as a seat, but is firm enough that it can also function as a table. The inside storage compartment is lined with black felt and measures 45" x 14" x 9" deep. The color of the wooden feet matches the color of the leather. I had intended it for the end of my bed where it would store sheets and blankets. Instead, to all appearances it's now become a combination ottoman/coffee table/extra seating in the living room while its undercover role is to de-clutter my one and only downstairs closet by storing out-of-season hats, scarves, gloves and boots. I think it would also work well as a window seat or extra seating for a family room that could hold toys and games. In a pinch, its inside dimensions are such that it could probably even double as a filing cabinet.Unadorned, its tufted dark-brownness is rather masculine looking, but topped with a scattering of books or magazines or a drinks tray or a hand-crafted whatzit or two, it can pretty much make itself at home just about anywhere, I should think.

Something of a cross between a large ottoman and a small chest, this storage ottoman isn't a top-notch example of either type, but serves well enough as both to make a worthy piece of furniture. The exterior dimensions are basically as reported on Amazon's item page; I measured 51 inches long by 18.5 wide by 15 high. 3 inches of the height come from the ottoman's feet. The interior storage space is 46 inches long by 14 wide by 9 deep.As an ottoman, its leather, though handsome, is on the drab side in terms of color, and the material on top is thin enough to be quite uncomfortable to sit on and even moderately uncomfortable as a footrest. I don't have much experience with large ottomans, so I don't know if its length (about as long as two couch cushions) is standard; I found that it made my narrow living room rather cumbersome, but if you have enough space it's probably a welcome addition. In terms of storage, the interior space is long but not very wide or deep. It's also worth noting that the antique brass hinges, while lovely, are substantial enough that they cut into the storage space when the ottoman lid is being shut. This is a minor problem at best, but it does make it impossible to fill the storage area to the very top.Despite its bulk, the ottoman is light enough to be lifted and moved by a moderately strong person. After keeping it in front of the couch, empty, for a couple days, I moved it into the bedroom, where, as another reviewer has pointed out, it fits naturally at the foot of the bed. I ended up using the storage space for DVDs; it held the bulk of my collection, which had previously been stacked two deep on a three-shelf bookcase. The laundry basket that used to sit at the foot of the bed is now comfortably positioned on top of the ottoman. In the end, it's my judgment that this ottoman is more useful as an out-of-the-way storage item than as a piece of living room furniture, but it's attractive enough to serve comfortably in either function.
